Managed external connections to managed database servers

About connection rules

Managed database servers created in MedStack Control only allow connections from resources within the same cluster. This default behaviour is fully automated in Control as provided by our privacy compliance guarantees. This setup offers a very robust security setting, where only a handful of resources are allowed to connect to your databases. However, if you need to connect to your database from an external source, you can still add some basic rules to allow specific IP addresses to open connections.

On the cluster overview page, you can view under the database server list a counter for the number of rules you've created for your databases. This number serves as a reminder that although we allow connections from origins that are not inside the MedStack ecosystem, it is a safe practice to use at less as possible and to remove them as soon as they are not necessary any more.

Add a rule

Follow these steps to add an allowed IP address rule to a managed database server.

  1. Identify the database server for which you'd like to manage the IP address access rules.
  2. Click the "Allowed IPs" button.
  3. Click the "New rule" button.
  4. Enter a name for the rule and the IP address to allow. Alternatively, you can click the "fill" button to create a rule for your machine's IP address.
  5. Click the "Create" button.

After clicking the "Create" button, a job will be queued to apply the change, and although the change is asynchronous, it doesn't require a server restart or any change on the database server. The change is only at network level and safe to be applied at any time.

Remove a rule

Follow these steps to remove an allowed IP address rule to a managed database server.

  1. Identify the database server for which you'd like to manage the IP address access rules.
  2. Click the "Allowed IPs" button.
  3. Identify the rule you'd like to remove and click the "delete" button.
